Ayurveda and Wellness
Bentota / Beruwala / KandyYear round
About this experience
Ayurveda is part of everyday wellness culture in Sri Lanka, from short resort treatments to longer stays with consultation, herbal therapies, and a quieter daily rhythm. Many travellers add it on the southwest coast around Bentota or after an active run of temples and safaris.
A short visit might mean massage, herbal steam, and time to rest. A fuller stay can include doctor led assessment, set meal guidance, yoga, and a programme across several days. Decide which level you want before you book, because the two experiences feel very different.
Wellness time works best when the itinerary is not packed. Give yourself empty hours around treatments so the day feels restorative rather than another item to complete.
What to expect
An arrival chat or consultation, changing into simple treatment clothing, then oil based therapies, steam, or rest time in a quiet room. Longer programmes add meals, gentle exercise, and follow up advice.
Season and timing
Ayurveda is available year round. The southwest coast is most pleasant from November to April. Many guests schedule wellness days after busier sightseeing legs.
Who it suits
Couples, solo travellers, and anyone who wants slower days, coastal rest, or recovery after hiking and safari. Less useful if you only have tightly packed sightseeing days with no buffer.
Practical tips
- Say whether you want a few treatments or a structured multi day programme.
- Share health conditions and medicines before consultation or massage.
- Avoid heavy sightseeing on the same afternoon as longer therapies.
- Choose established centres if you want clinical guidance, not only spa comfort.
- Wear loose clothing and keep jewellery minimal on treatment days.
- Drink water and keep meals light if advised by the therapist or doctor.

Whale Watching
Whale watching in Sri Lanka is usually a morning boat trip from the south or east coast. Mirissa is the main base for most travellers, while Trincomalee takes over when the east coast season is stronger. On a good day you may see blue whales, sperm whales, or spinner dolphins, though sightings always depend on sea conditions.
Wildlife Safari
A jeep safari is one of the clearest ways to see Sri Lanka’s dry zone wildlife. Yala is known for leopards, Udawalawe is strong for elephants, and Wilpattu feels quieter and more open. Near Habarana, parks such as Minneriya and Kaudulla become special when elephants gather in the greener months.
Scenic Train Rides
The hill country train between Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Ella is one of Sri Lanka’s most loved travel days. The line climbs through tea fields, cuttings, small stations, and misty ridges, so the window view is the main reason to ride rather than pure speed.
Surfing
Sri Lanka makes surfing easy to add to a wider holiday. Warm water, shortboard and longboard options, and plenty of beginner beaches mean you do not need a pure surf trip to get time in the water.
