Negombo sits close to the international airport and works well as a first or last night by the lagoon and beach. Fishing boats, canals, and a slower coastal pace define the town.
It is not usually a long stay destination, but it softens jet lag before a longer drive inland or along the west coast.

Tuk tuks are enough for beach hotels, the lagoon, and town. Airport transfers are short. A private car helps if you continue to Colombo or the Cultural Triangle the next day.
December to March is often drier on the west coast. Humidity stays high. Afternoon rain can appear outside the driest months.
