Snorkelling and diving in Sri Lanka are warm water coastal activities rather than long technical expeditions. Pigeon Island near Trincomalee is a favourite for clear reefs and turtles in season. On the south and southwest, Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna offer easier reef access for casual swimmers.
Kalpitiya adds a different west coast option when conditions line up, while many beach stays simply book a half day boat to nearby reefs. Visibility and comfort depend heavily on which coast is in season.

East coast sites around Trincomalee are stronger from about March to October. South and southwest reefs are better from about November to April. Mornings often bring calmer water.
