Horseshoe bay and surf
Southern Coast
Hiriketiya is a small horseshoe bay on the south coast with a strong surf scene and a compact beach village feel. Travellers come for waves, swimming in calmer corners, and a few days of easy coastal living.
The bay is tiny compared with Tangalle long beaches, so days stay simple and local.
It pairs well with Tangalle stays or a Mirissa link on a deep south route.
Best time
December to April for beach and surf conditions.
Ideal stay
2 nights
Best for
Surfers, Couples, Design minded stays
Clear options with timing and practical notes.
Paddle out on the main peak with a rental board or join a lesson if you are new to waves.
Use sheltered parts of the bay for swimming when the main peak is too strong.
Walk the small bay path between cafes, surf shops, and viewpoint rocks at an easy pace.
Ride to wider Tangalle beaches when you want more space than the compact bay offers.
Most of the bay is walkable. Tuk tuks help for Tangalle or nearby coves. A private car is useful when arriving from Yala or Mirissa.
December to March is generally better for calmer water. Surf can be good in other windows depending on swell. Ask local schools about the day conditions.
A deep south beach stop after Tangalle or Yala, and before or after Mirissa on a coastal finish.
